I’m using smart updates for a long, but nowhere explains how it works under the hood, so I’m worried that the efficiency of my server is getting down.
Theres anywhere where this is explained? If not enough efficient, I will do my own script in a long term future.

Smart Updates should not be influencing the efficiency of your server. Basically, a website is being cloned, which is then updated to be compared with the initial website for errors… For more details, you can have a look at the following documentation on Smart Updates.
